Come Out of the Blue

One day, back in 2019, some months after the dust had settled on my brother Andy’s death in Sydney, I was out walking my two dogs, Beaujo and Ellie, both ruby red Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, through Bushy Park in Terenure, Dublin.

It's late afternoon on a dark autumn day.

The pathway ahead stretches off along the Dodder River into the distance, through a tunnel-like canopy of trees and falling leaves, with the light breaking through at the end of the dark tunnel.

I am stopped in my tracks and pause to take in the dark shroud of falling autumn leaves. I get an uncanny feeling that this is one of those golden moments of insight articulated in metaphor, not English.

As I’m marvelling at the sight of life and loss in the darkness,
I look up to see that dogs live in the moment and are only interested in moving forward. And Beaujo, who is off-leash, keeps running up ahead but pauses to turn back towards me, calling me out of the darkness and back up into the light of the moment.

We walked that path daily for the next few months, and I knew a song was on its way. The autumn days grew darker, and sometimes we got caught in the rain. Beaujo took it all in his stride. Getting wet to him was just another thing to love about life. Ellie, like me, was never a fan of getting wet.

In the dark days, weeks, months and years that followed, I started writing 'Come Out Of The Blue' for my deceased brother, Andreas.

On some level, this song is written from the perspective of an alternate universe where my brother didn’t die alone. He reached out in time, and I found a way to reach him.

The truth is, it was and is about facing the grief of his loss and coming to terms with not being able to save him.

It's about surrendering to the darkness, walking the path and following the river, with no guarantee that there will be any light at the end of the tunnel.

There is, of course, a light at the end of the tunnel, but it's a light that can only be seen after you've faced the darkness.

Come Out Of The Blue

Leaves fall in the wind, summer's gone by
An’ you walk in the misty grey, ‘neath an autumn-coloured sky
Lost in the shadows where it is clear
If you could be anywhere else
Anywhere else but here
If you could be anywhere else
Anywhere else but here

Come on out of the blue
Out of the rain
Come on in out of the blue

There’s a bell we ring when it’s time to come home
So you don’t get left in the dark and remember you’re not alone
In this golden world of falling debris
Look back and you will find yourself
Seeing things differently
Look back and you will find yourself
Seeing things differently

Come on out of the blue
Out of the rain
Out of the blue
Out of the rain
Come out of the blue
Out of the rain
Come on in out of the blue

It's ever-changing here an’ you come to see
It's all behind you now, things ain't what they used to be

Lost in the shadows where it is clear
If you could be anywhere else
Anywhere else but here
If you could be anywhere else
Anywhere else but here

Come on out of the blue
Out of the rain
Out of the blue, out of the rain
Out of the blue, out of the rain

CODA:
Out of the blue, out of the rain
Out of the blue, out of the rain
Come on in out of the blue
Come on in out of the blue
